Jodhpur...
Situated in the extreme eastern
part of the Desert Thar is this spectacular land of
whitish-golden sand dunes, yellowish-green shrubs,
leafless thorny trees,etc. , and great natural
beauty. Founded in 1459 AD by Rao Jodha, chief of
the Rathore clan of Rajput, Jodhpur is the second
largest city after Jaipur in Rajasthan. It is one of
the aristocratic and majestic places of India and is
the home of valourous Rathores who claimed descent
from Rama.
The City lies at the foot of a low
range of sandstone hills about 125m above the
surrounding plains is divided into two parts as Old
and New ones. The old city is hazed by 10 Km long, a
high and thick wall of sandstone with eight gates
leading out of it, and the new city being outside
the walled city. The Rathores sustained harmonious
relations with the Mughals and Maharaja Jaswant
Singh (1678). In the reign of Maharaja Umed Singh
Jodhpur flourished into a beautiful modern city.

Jain
Temples
There are approximately 15 Ossian
Jain temples near Jodhpur. The most fascinating one
of the Jain Osiyan temples in Rajasthan is the
Mahavira temple. It is dedicated to the last (24th)
Jain Prophet. The main temple was constructed around
775 A.D. And till about 15th century, the other
smaller shrines were being added to the main
complex. Originally built in the 8th century, the
existing temple complex however dates back tpo the
12th century. Sachi Mata is better known as Indrani,
the consort of the rain-god Indra who according to
legend married her for her voluptuousness.
